“The Wooden Floor helped me get better grades. I was struggling with assignments in school and my GPA wasn’t great. The Wooden Floor gave me the opportunity to get back on my feet.”
ROLANDO, CLASS OF 2023

Rolando’s family has had their children enrolled at The Wooden Floor for over 20 years. Your support allows The Wooden Floor to be there for each of our students for up to a 10-year journey, from elementary school to high school graduation, using dance education strategically integrated with tutoring, college and career mentoring, counseling, and family services so they can be on solid footing and rise above hardships.
The average nationwide test scores for nine-year-old students in 2022 declined five points in reading and seven points in mathematics compared to 2020. This is the largest average score decline in reading since 1990, and the first ever score decline in mathematics.*
“I have 10 siblings. Neither of our parents went to college or had any higher education, so the staff helped us get a better idea of what college is and how to get there. The Wooden Floor is a great foundation for any child going into adulthood. They offer so much – a lot of opportunity, a lot of happiness, and a lot of friends.”
ROLANDO, CLASS OF 2023
Rolando has been a student of The Wooden Floor since he was 10 years old. Three of his sisters have graduated from the organization and the youngest, Marisol, enrolled just last year. With 10 siblings, he says life at home can sometimes be overwhelming. He feels The Wooden Floor has motivated him to do better in school, help raise his grades, and find a path to college.

“I volunteered to help when my little sister Marisol attended The Wooden Floor’s Annual Auditions. If I wasn’t there, she wouldn’t have wanted to audition. She was so nervous so I calmed her down a lot. Now she is at The Wooden Floor and loves it.”
ROLANDO, CLASS OF 2023
At 17 years old, Rolando has gained maturity and found his voice, which he credits to the mentoring he has received at The Wooden Floor. In addition to support from staff and fellow students, Rolando is in the organization’s Dance Partner program and says he receives great advice and support from his Dance Partners. Rolando is on track to graduate from high school and attend community college with the dream of being a college counselor because he enjoys working with children.
