“The Wooden Floor helped me with critical thinking. Dance makes you think a lot. Your movements, especially when you’re improvising, you have to do it in the moment. That helps me in school because when you’re raising your hand for a math problem, you are also improvising. Dance also helps us think more deeply. It is not only about showing movement, but also about showing your feelings.”

Cindy first joined The Wooden Floor in 2022 with a 2.0 GPA and she was enrolled in The Wooden Floor’s mandatory tutoring program. Through her dedication and guided support from her tutors, she steadily improved, eventually achieving the 4.0 GPA she has today. Her tutors helped her address her areas of need and through their mentorship, also gave her the confidence to see that she could succeed academically.

Your support makes a difference in the life of Cindy and her 475 peers at The Wooden Floor.
In Santa Ana, only about 13% of adults have a bachelor’s degree or higher*, compared to about 38% nationwide**. For most of our students, there are many obstacles to overcome to pursue higher education. Tackling them begins on the first day of classes at The Wooden Floor. Each student has access to one-on-one tutoring in addition to other social-emotional and academic wellness workshops, which focus on encouraging students to develop a life-long love of learning and the confidence to succeed.
In addition to The Wooden Floor tutoring staff, we have partnerships with Vanguard University, Concordia University, and Southwest College, to provide tutors to engage with our students who gain hands-on access to academic resources that prepare them for life beyond The Wooden Floor.
